Crumbs for the 24th April 2005

There will be a meeting of Kirk Session on Monday 25th April at 7.30 pm. A church committe meeting will be held on Monday 9th May at 7.30 pm.

Church, Community and Change:

During the launch of Church, Community and Change, the congregation were asked how we felt about engaging with the community. Many of the responses were positive but a there were a number of issues raised. Over the next 7 weeks those issues will be addressed at workshops on Thursday evening, 7.30 pm in the downstairs hall. As many people as possible are invited to come along to listen to the issues and discuss them.
This week the meeting will take the form of a Bible study and discussion. If anyone needs a lift please speak to the minister or any of the elders.

There is no longer a box for stamps in the vestibule. Margaret Bill is still collecting them so if you have some please give them straight to her.

Our mid-week meeting is on Thursday at 7.30. Why not come along for a time of prayer and Bible study? If you need a lift please let someone know and we can arrange to pick you up.

If you know of any member of the congregation who is admitted to hospital please contact the Minister (90715256) or any of the elders. Many people rely on the hospital to notify ministers but this does not always happen and we do not want anyone to be overlooked. Hospital visitation always takes priority and it would be helpful to be informed as soon as possible of those being admitted.

Holiday Bible Club
Starts Monday 22nd August
4 to 10 years from 2-4pm
10 to 14 years from 7-9pm

Landlubbers are pirates searching for hidden treasure on a desert island. They discover the greatest treasure of all: knowing Jesus. that's what the apostle Paul discovered and shared with Jesus' followers in Philippi. Landlubbers is a flexible, energetic programme which introduces children to Jesus and invites them to become his followers, whether they are part of a church community or not. If you want to 'captain' your own ship, lead some sea shanties, give out rations and search for treasure please speak to Barbara. Meetings begin the first week in June.

Special Prayer request:
Please pray for a number of children whose parents have recently separated. Pray that these children will not suffer because of the break odwn in the family and pray for the healing of relationships.

Songs of Praise to highlight Christian efforts to 'Make Poverty
History'

A Tanzanian mother who for decades walked for 10 hours each night to
fetch water for her family, will feature on this week's BBC Songs of Praise
programme (April 17th, 17.00, BBC 1).

Joyce Mbwilo, from Uhambingeto village, tells Songs of Praise
presenter Sally Magnusson, who last month travelled out to meet her, just
what life is like for the 1.2 billion people who lack access to clean water.
She tells Sally how she used to wake up at midnight, walk 14km, returning at
10am the following morning.

Sally Magnusson also visits Gleneagles, Scotland, the venue for the
July meeting of the G8 group of richest nations, as well as talking to local
church volunteers from Tearfund in Auchterarder, near to Gleneagles, who are
praying and campaigning for G8 leaders to make decisions to help 'make
poverty history'. The programme features Aberdeen University Chapel Choir
and singer Eddie Reader.

Sally Magnusson says of her encounter with Joyce: "It was a
privilege to meet Joyce and her family. It was an occasion I will remember
for a long time. She has one of those faces which lights up and radiates
such warmth."

Sally Magnusson continues: "But Joyce did not pull any punches in
our conversation. Her life is extraordinarily hard, and the future she
dreams of for her children depends squarely on us. I went away conscious of
how much there is to be done, but also of how even quite small practical
gestures of support in this country can make a difference to the lives of people like Joyce.

David Strachan, Songs of Praise producer says: "We hope the
programme will show the real change that has been achieved in one village in
Tanzania as a result of partnership between Tearfund and local churches, and
also as a result of debt cancellation.

"The programme also looks at the commitment of Christians in the UK
to the Make Poverty History campaign through the work of the local
congregation and in the passionate singing of the community which gathered
for the recording of Songs of Praise."

Or, Test your courage and help raise money for the 'Helping Hands' Youth and Children's Project on the Junior Challenge Course and Orienteering Route.

All Sunday school children are free; Parents who wish to come along and join the fun are £6.

CARE is a well-established mainstream Christian charity that undertakes a variety of social caring and educational programmes as well as research and lobbying on associated issues.

CARE's concern is for the well-being of all in society but particularly for the most vulnerable and needy. CARE has a Headquarters office in Westminister and is represented in most of the UK Capitals and in Brussels.
